Vale de Milho
This is a short course with nine holes, all of them par 3, designed by David Thomas. His most famous project is the Brabazon Course at The Belfry, near Birmingham, England. That course has had the honour of hosting the Ryder Cup no less than three times, in 1985,1989 and 1993. Many golfers will be surprised that a course just 970 meters long could be so complete and challenging – a real test for champions. In order to play this course to par (27), you will be faced with a series of obstacles from the first hole right through to the final one. In addition, Vale de Milho, situated near Carvoeiro, is visually a very attractive course, with waterfalls and wonderful views over the sea.

Its proximity to the sea and various lakes make it an interesting test of golfing skills, not to mention its uniqueness in relation to other Algarve courses. It is very open to the elements with little vegetation and lots of water hazards. It requires a technically skilled player to achieve a good result from a round due to the prevailing onshore breeze.

Pine Cliffs
This is one of the country’s most original golf courses, built in a pine wood at the edge of spectacular cliffs, overlooking the beautiful beaches of the Algarve and the Atlantic beyond. Opened in 1990, Pine Cliffs was designed by Martin Hawtree. The prize of the course is its ninth over a ravine with beautiful views down on the sandy beach, locally nicknamed the “Devil’s Parlour”. This small and beautiful course is set among the pine trees and presents a pleasant and charming course with good greens.

Victoria Clube de Golf
The Victoria Clube de Golfe Course is the most recent course to be opened to the public in the Algarve. Laid out on virtually flat terrain covering some 90 hectares it includes a series of constructed mounds specially landscaped to emulate the outline of inland hills on the horizon – a feature that enriches the course with a sense of movement and harmony. The series of beautiful lakes and waterfalls also helps to provide an attractive background whilst playing the course. This is at present the longest 18 holes golf course in Portugal and promises to be a notable course in Europe. One extraordinary fact concerning Victoria is that the Palmer design team masterly created 18 greens with totally different shapes and sizes. This is one of the distinguishing characteristics of the course and for which local knowledge will be an advantage.

Laguna Golf Course
The Vilamoura golf courses are a reality that have turned it into one of the popular golfing destinations in Europe, with three separate layouts one of them with 27 holes. As the name suggest, the course has several water hazards within its interesting layout. It is a course that can be likened to some degree to the challenges that are provided by a Links course. However, there are many water hazards with strategically placed bunkers in open terrain. These factors combined with the occasional strong wind make for an interesting round.

Its project was Frank Pennink’s first one in Portugal, and we can understand why he was invited to design and project other courses in our country. Originally, the course had 18 holes, designed by Sir Henry Cotton. In 1972, however, a loop of nine holes was added to the course. Recent works have given it further new dimensions – two courses of 18 holes (The Ocean Course and the Royal Golf Course). The holes wander through pine trees with wonderful views of the sea between the homes lining the sides of the fairways. Some of the holes take you along the cliff top with the blue Atlantic sea as the backdrop.

Quinta do Lago North
The course has two architects. The American WILLIAM MITCHELL designed holes 1 to 5 and 15 to 18 in 1974. These holes (as with the other course) share a unique character. The terrain is superb and typical of the area, sandy and littered with umbrella pines trees. In the spring, the rough is covered with a blanket of wild flowers, heather and gorse. The Fairways and tees are covered with Bermuda hybrid with a cool season mixture of grasses, which provides year-round, top quality swards. The greens are sown with Creeping Bentgrass Penncross, giving a fast, true putting surface, and which provide good all-year round putting surfaces. The bunkering is incomparable, both on the fairways and surrounding the greens and gives the course an advantage over many of similar quality and design. All the famous male and female players who have experienced this course, including “Ryder Cup” and “Curtis Cup” team members, have been euphoric in their praise for this course, which will soon take its place among the great European layouts.

Quinta do Lago South
Designed by WILLIAM MITCHELL from the USA and opened in 1974, the Quinta do Lago South course was used eight times for the “Portuguese Open Championship” in 1976, 1984, 1985, 1986, 1988, 1989, 1990 and 2001. It has also hosted many large professional and amateur championships. The favourite of many tour players, this course offers the possibility to hit the greens in regulation in several ways. However, each hole has one easy route and the player who sees this, and has the skill to follow the designer’s intention, and produce sub-par figures. An anti-clockwise loop, it favours the draw shot. This course favours the long hitter, but requires the player to pick a particular route to score well. Although both anti-clockwise loops, the first nine favours a draw, while the second favours a fade from the tee. An enjoyable experience for players of all standards.

Quinta de Cima
This new sister course to Quinta da Ria is of a Championship character which will provide an enjoyable challenge for most players. Set in rolling land dotted with almond trees it provides open fairways, well placed bunkers and enough water to attract the odd misdirected golf ball. On one of the Driving Ranges, (with its generous dimensions and built in the south/north direction), when hitting from the northern tees, one can appreciate the magnificent view of the mountains as well as the Ocean. Though from any part of the course both the sea and the Algarve mountains are a delight to anyone’s eyes. The first two holes indicate the true nature of the course emphasizing the need for good club selection combined with accuracy. Players are already making their comments about the tricky Par-5 sixteenth hole and the the memorable eighteenth.

Quinta da Ria
A course designed by Rocky Roquemore to take advantage of the beautiful natural setting in a Nature Reserve with the blue sea as its southern boundary. A 475 meter par-5 hole sets the tone of the course taking the player down a gentle slope to the first of the several undulating green. The par-3 fifth hole is a challenging dogleg to the left with a lake to catch the short ball. The back nine takes the player close to the beach and the panoramic sea views. The interesting par-4 fourteenth of 333 meters which is another dogleg to the left presents water to the right on the drive and then again inviting water to your left to carry on the approach shot to the green. The eighteenth par-5 of 475 meters has a generous width to the fairway but the green is almost surrounded by guarding bunkers.

Castro Marim Golfe
Located close to the historic town of Castro Marim the course runs through undulating hills dotted with pines and occasional views across the River Guadiana to neighbouring Spain. This course calls for careful play with strategically placed water hazards and fairway terrain that can place you in trouble. This is not mention the well placed bunkers waiting for an erring ball. The par-3 on the seventeenth is a hole that calls for special club selection with bunkers in front of the green and a lake behind, whilst at the same time subject to the prevailing winds off the sea. What makes the Castro Marim Golf & Country Club really special is its unique blend of history, culture, nature, river, sea, beach and sporting facilities in one single setting, together with its exceptional service and quality. Its proximity to the Benamor course has meant that there is now a new major golfing centre in the Algarve.
